Who We Are

Where Innovation Meets Nature - Designing Tomorrow's Spaces Today

Our Story

Look, we didn't start AetherStorm because we wanted to be just another architecture firm in Vancouver. We started because we were tired of seeing buildings that didn't give a damn about the environment or the people who'd actually live in them.

Back in 2012, three of us were sitting in a coffee shop on Granville Street, sketching ideas on napkins and complaining about how the industry kept prioritizing profits over sustainability. We figured if nobody else was gonna do it right, we'd have to step up ourselves. That's how AetherStorm got its start - from frustration, napkin sketches, and way too much caffeine.

Fast forward to today, and we've grown into a team that's genuinely obsessed with making buildings that don't just look good but actually work with nature instead of against it. We've done residential projects where families tell us their energy bills dropped by half. We've designed commercial spaces that people actually want to spend time in. And yeah, we've messed up along the way, learned some hard lessons, but that's what makes our work better now.

We're based right here in Vancouver because honestly, this city gets it. The mountains, the ocean, the rain - it all reminds us daily why sustainable design isn't just a checkbox. It's literally the only way forward.

Meet the Team

Sarah Chen

Sarah Chen

Principal Architect & Co-Founder

I've spent 15 years figuring out how to make buildings breathe. Not literally, but you know what I mean - spaces that feel alive, that respond to their environment. I'm the one who'll fight tooth and nail for that extra window placement or that green roof system. My background's in environmental engineering before I switched to architecture, so I'm always the nerd running thermal simulations at 2am.

Marcus Rodriguez

Marcus Rodriguez

Design Director & Co-Founder

I'm the dreamer who sketches impossible things and then has to figure out how to actually build them. Studied in Barcelona, worked in Copenhagen, ended up in Vancouver and never looked back. My philosophy? Every building should tell a story, and that story better include "and then it powered itself with solar panels." I probably annoy everyone with my obsession over facade details, but hey, details matter.

Jennifer Park

Jennifer Park

Urban Planning Lead

Cities are living ecosystems, and my job's to make sure our projects actually improve the neighborhoods they're in. I've worked on urban renewal projects across BC, and I've seen what happens when developers don't care about community. That's not us. I bring the "let's talk to the actual residents" energy to every project.

David Okonkwo

David Okonkwo

Sustainability Specialist

I'm basically the conscience of AetherStorm - if something's not hitting our sustainability targets, I'm the guy raising hell about it. LEED certified, Passive House trained, and honestly a bit obsessive about building performance data. My background's in mechanical engineering, so I get really into HVAC systems in a way that probably isn't normal.

Emma Larsson

Emma Larsson

Interior Design Director

While everyone's focused on the envelope and structure, I'm making sure the inside actually feels like a place humans want to be. Scandinavian design influence, obviously, but adapted for West Coast living. I believe in minimalism that's warm, not cold. Natural materials, lots of light, and spaces that flex with how people actually live.

Alex Thompson

Alex Thompson

Landscape Architecture

I'm the person who makes sure we're not just plunking buildings down and calling it a day. Landscape integration's my jam - rain gardens, native plantings, outdoor spaces that actually work with our climate. Grew up on Vancouver Island, so BC's ecology is in my blood. Every project should give back to the land somehow.

Priya Sharma

Priya Sharma

Project Architect

Fresh out of UBC's architecture program with a thesis on adaptive reuse, I'm bringing the "let's not tear everything down" perspective. I handle a lot of the technical coordination and somehow keep our wild ideas within building codes. My superpower? Making permit applications actually get approved.

Thomas Wu

Thomas Wu

BIM & Technology Manager

I'm the tech geek who makes sure we're using the latest tools without getting caught up in shiny-object syndrome. BIM modeling, parametric design, energy simulations - if it runs on a computer and makes our designs better, I'm all over it. Also the person who fixes everyone's software crashes.

Rachel Kim

Rachel Kim

Operations Manager

Someone's gotta keep this creative chaos organized, and that someone's me. I handle everything from client relations to making sure projects don't go off the rails budget-wise. Think of me as the person who turns "wouldn't it be cool if..." into "here's how we can actually do this."

How We Work

Listen First, Design Second

We've learned the hard way that jumping straight into sketches without really understanding what someone needs is a recipe for disaster. So yeah, we spend a lot of time just listening. What's your daily routine? How do you actually use your space? What drives you nuts about where you're living or working now? That stuff matters way more than whatever trend's hot on Pinterest.

Sustainability Isn't Optional

Every single project we take on has to meet our sustainability standards. Non-negotiable. That doesn't mean we're forcing everyone into ultra-modern glass boxes with solar panels everywhere (though we can do that if you want). It means we're thinking about energy efficiency, material sourcing, and long-term environmental impact from day one. It's baked into everything.

Collaboration Over Ego

Look, we've all got strong opinions - comes with the territory when you care about your work. But we've found that the best solutions come from actually collaborating instead of everyone trying to prove they're the smartest person in the room. That includes collaborating with you, the client. It's your building, not ours. We're just here to make your vision work better than you imagined.

No Surprises Policy

We're pretty upfront about costs, timelines, and potential challenges. If something's gonna be expensive or complicated, we'll tell you straight up instead of sugarcoating it and surprising you later. It's just the right way to work. Plus, it means we can actually problem-solve together instead of playing damage control down the line.

Why Vancouver?

People ask us this sometimes, especially when we could've set up shop in Toronto or even gone international. But honestly? Vancouver's where we need to be.

This city's got one of the most ambitious climate action plans in North America. The building industry here actually gives a damn about green standards. And we're surrounded by this incredible natural environment that constantly reminds us why our work matters.

Plus, let's be real - where else can you bike to a client meeting through Stanley Park and then grab sushi that's actually good? The quality of life here lets us do better work. Happy team makes better buildings.

We're proud to be part of Vancouver's architecture community, contributing to the city's transformation into a truly sustainable urban center. Even if the rain gets old sometimes.
